The Heart of Tinkering Toolbox: A Small Business with Big Dreams
The Tinkering Toolbox is a locally owned, family-operated handyman and small construction business, officially launched in June 2021. What started as a side venture has steadily grown into something much more. From simple tasks like replacing light fixtures and faucets to building decks, renovating bathrooms and kitchens, managing apartment turnovers and restorations, and even commercial repairs, we’ve cultivated strong connections with the community and built a reputation for providing quality work with integrity.
For me, this business isn’t just a job—it’s a way of life.
Why start a business? For me, it was about autonomy. I wanted control over my time and my worth—two things no employer could truly value the way I do. I’ve watched my efforts in past jobs generate four to ten times the value of my paycheck, yet I was told my role wasn’t “valuable enough” to earn more than $12-14 an hour. That never sat right with me. You only get so much time in this life, and I couldn’t spend mine building someone else’s dream.
That’s why I took the leap to start Tinkering Toolbox. Over the past four years, I’ve poured more time and energy into this business than I ever gave to any employer. Every process, system, and success was built from scratch. We became officially registered and insured, launched a website and Google presence (thanks to some incredible friends), upgraded equipment, invested in software, and built relationships—brick by brick.
We’ve done it all without grants, loans, big savings accounts, or government backing. Every dollar we’ve reinvested came from the hard work and sweat of the previous job.
Of course, there have been struggles. Sometimes we’ve made the same money—or even less—than I did working for someone else. We’ve hired help along the way, and while those individuals have moved on to new ventures (just as I once did), their contributions helped shape this journey.
We’ve also seen new businesses pop up around us—some with massive budgets, flashy apps, radio ads, and government partnerships. While they’ve expanded quickly, we’ve chosen the harder road. We’ve worked tirelessly with limited resources because this business isn’t just about making a living—it’s about creating something meaningful and lasting.
Now, as we look to the future, what we need is you.
At Tinkering Toolbox, we are more than just a small business. We’re a family with big dreams, serving Erie County with integrity and passion. We may not be the biggest or flashiest, but every project we take on reflects our dedication to quality, hard work, and building a better future.
Thank you for believing in us and supporting a small business with heart.
